ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this page Adriana. I think it is a really useful page to learn and teach English, having in mind that one of the best ways we have to learn and to approach ourselves to a language is music. We cannot deny music help us remember and learn easily and in an enjoyable way. In my personal experience, learning English through music is more meaningful than trying to memorize words and structures just repeating them when they are out of context. I also think using these apps in our teaching practices is a way to recognize that we are all diverse and, as Howard Gardner affirms, we all have different intelligences and we all develop ones more than the others, that is why we are better learners –and teachers- when we recognize those intelligences and we take advantage of them or we try to reinforce them when necessary. It is worth it to mention here Gardner’s definition of the intelligence, known for him as a “a biopsychological potential to process information that can be activated in a cultural setting to solve problems or create products that are of value in a culture”, (Gardner, 1999: 33). So, activating this potential implies working with cultural domains of a society, such as language and music and their relationships, to make the learning process really meaningful. Plus, as Engh (2013) affirms in his article Why Use Music in English Language Learning? A Survey of the Literature, “because music is an authentic activity that occurs among first language users both in terms of discussion of popular music as well as in the group singing that occurs at many public events ranging from karaoke to football, it also proves motivating to use for language-learners in a classroom setting”. Hence, it can motivate students to learn English or any language they want in an autonomous way, because they have the opportunity to practice wherever and whenever they are, either having or not being able to access to internet.
ReplyDeleteIt is also the responsibility of the teacher to guide students through that adventure, so hopefully they would arrive to a state of awareness about the leaning strategies that really help them.

Learning English through listening to music is been a very useful tool to enhance students listening and speaking, too, while students might be able to describe what the song is about and what they understood.
ReplyDeleteHowever, using lyrics training should be done with proper teacher guidance, since is their job to have students understand the context of the songs.
From my personal experience, this is a good web page to work with but, depending on the number of students, it can be boring since she songs are not so interesting for them.
Nevertheless, every tool that help us to work in the classroom will be always welcomed.
I really appreciate the material that you posted on your blog. Sometimes, I waste a lot of time looking for activities, which sometimes I don't find like I want and I end up doing them. The advantage in these activities, is that, after downloading them, they can be modified. Also, there are pages which are totally unknown for me. Currently, I am working in my project investigation with nursery rhymes, at this time the children are too young to use "Lyrics Training" application, but in the future it is quite practical, even for me jaja I can learn while I play. Thanks for share.
